YWAM Sydney Island Breeze is a Discipleship Training School (DTS) based in Sydney, Australia, running outreach and training programs. The website presents their mission, programs, and application process with a bold, modern WordPress theme designed to reflect the organisation’s vibrant identity.

The website was built on WordPress with the custom ywamibs theme, featuring a bold, modern design language. It integrates program information for DTS, Second-Level Schools, and mission opportunities, along with an application and registration system for prospective students. The information architecture presents the organisation’s vision, beliefs, and outreach programs in a clean, accessible layout.

Design Evolution

Over the years, the YWAM Sydney Island Breeze website has evolved through several design iterations to keep pace with the organisation’s growing needs and changing design trends. Each refresh built on the previous version, refining the user experience while maintaining the bold, mission-focused aesthetic that defines the YWAM brand.

Theme Architecture

Horizontal Sections

Pages can use a special “Page With Horizontal Sections” template, where each child page becomes a horizontal section within the parent page. This creates a seamless scrolling experience where visitors navigate vertically through full-width content blocks. The Nested Pages plugin was installed to give the YWAM team an intuitive tree-view interface for managing the parent-child page hierarchy directly from the Pages screen.

Parallax Backgrounds

Each horizontal section supports three background types — plain colour, image, or video — all rendered with a parallax scrolling effect on desktop browsers. Section height, background positioning (X and Y axes), and fallback images for video backgrounds are configurable per section, giving the team full control over the visual presentation of each content block.

Custom Shortcode Plugin

The extensive shortcode library was built as a custom WordPress plugin, keeping the site’s dynamic content features decoupled from the theme. The shortcode system includes action buttons (donate, apply, training, contact), program-specific “Learn More” links, a blog feed, navigation menus, sidebars, and a specialised three-box layout for the Ministries page.

Staff Training & Empowerment

Beyond building the site itself, the YWAM staff were trained to manage the WordPress system independently. This included hands-on guidance on content editing, page management, and theme customisation. As a result, the team is now fully capable of maintaining the website themselves, implementing their own design ideas, exploring new themes, and making ongoing improvements without relying on external developers.

Custom WordPress Theme

Program Landing Pages

Custom page templates for each program type — DTS, Advanced Training, and Mission Building — present course details, schedules, and call-to-action buttons tailored to each audience. The layouts guide visitors from initial interest through to the application step.

Application & Registration System

Integrated contact and application forms capture prospective student inquiries directly through the site. The forms are styled to match the brand palette and feed into the organisation’s existing enrolment workflow.

Brand & Visual Identity

A consistent colour palette and typography system carry the YWAM brand across every page. The bold, mission-focused design language reflects the energy of the organisation’s outreach programs while maintaining readability and accessibility.
